Tip to Tip Tour

Confederation Trail (6 Days / 5 Nights)

This 273 km (170 mi) route traverses the Island on the award-winning Confederation Trail.

The Confederation Trail is a walking and cycling trail that offers a comfortable introduction to gravel riding with its smooth crushed-gravel surface. As a rail trail, it is relatively flat with gradients that never exceed 2%. This tour features the scenic Morell to St. Peters Bay section, where the trail is runs parallel to St. Peters Bay offering spectular views of the Bay and the mussel farming within it.

The Confederation Trail starts in Tignish and ends in Elmira. If you want to make your tour a true Tip to Tip across the Island, then we can add on two sections of quiet country pavement so that you start in North Cape and end in East Point for a total distance of 300 km.

Potential add-ons include visits to Basin Head and its famous white "singing sands", Greenwich in PEI National Park with its parabolic sand dunes, or Souris, a friendly, bustling seaside town.

The route starts in Tignish, in the northwestern part of PEI. In Tignish, you start the Confederation Trail at Kilometer 0. On the way to Mill River, you'll ride past farms, woodlands, and the quaint village of Alberton with a historic stone rail station. Here, you can take a detour to see Northport, a busy fishing community.

Mill River - Miscouche

Day 2

Distance:   59 km  |  37 mi

Follow the Confederation Trail until you reach O'Leary where a short detour will take you by the world's largest potato sculpture. Next you'll follow the winding Confederation Trail past a restored 135 year old grist mill. The route to Miscouche takes you through several quaint villages, woodlands, farmlands and near two excellent dairy bars for those who need an ice cream fix along the way.

Miscouche - Hunter River

Day 3

Distance:   53 km  |  33 mi

Your ride will start with a short ride to Summerside, Canada's smallest city, which is home to a beautiful waterfront complete with a lovely boardwalk. Don't miss Spinnaker's Landing, a market on the water featuring shops, decks, and eateries. After passing through the city, the scenery will then change to potato fields until you enter Kensington, which is home to National Historic Site, the Kensington Railway Station. On your way to Hunter River, you'll pass by farms, forests, and ride across bridges and along sparkling rivers.

Hunter River - Tracadie Cross

Day 4

Distance:   40 km  |  25 mi

Today's route leaves Hunter River and climbs the longest hill of your trip. Don't worry, the gradient never exceeds 2%, so you'll barely feel it. Then the route passes through forests and farmland until it travels around the outskirts of Charlottetown. Once out of the Charlottetown area, you'll pass by vast fields, farms, and wooded areas until you reach Tracadie Cross.

Tracadie Cross - St. Peters Bay

Day 5

Distance:   35 km  |  22 mi

Today's route features the most scenic portion of the Trail. On your way to Morell, you'll pass old bridges and vast fields. Then you'll start the spectacular ride to St. Peters Bay where you will see stunning views of the bay, and hundreds of mussel socks and buoys within.

St. Peters Bay - Elmira

Day 6

Distance:   43 km  |  27 mi

Your route to the end of the Confederation Trail, Kilometer 273 in Elmira, takes you through the peaceful forests of the interior of northeastern PEI. You'll pass through PEI’s only bird sanctuary. The stunning nature on this portion of the trail includes a spirit spring that is not to be missed. Be sure to check out the Elmira Train Museum, which marks the end of the line.
